This film sequence captures the drama of the explosion that occurred when the first chunk of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter. Taken at 1-minute intervals for 17 minutes, the frames show, in infrared, the initial collision and resulting fireball. Jupiter appears dim because its methane gas absorbs infrared light. The bright point to the right of Jupiter is its moon Io.
